Family Self-Sufficiency is a HUD program that encourages public housing authorities (PHAs) to develop local strategies to help Housing Choice Voucher (Section-8) families obtain employment that will lead to economic independence and self-sufficiency. CAA is in partnership with the Michigan State Housing Development Authority to develop a comprehensive program that gives participating FSS family members the skills and experience needed to enable them to obtain and maintain suitable employment. Goal-setting and service delivery are coordinated through Community Action Agency's FSS Resource Coordinator.
Families are provided support through job, education, and human service delivery systems to address what may seem to be insurmountable personal and financial barriers to economic growth. As a family's income increases the amount of rent they are responsible to pay remains the same and the difference is escrowed so that when they complete the program requirements they have funds available to move them to self sufficiency.
