The Learning Partners program provides Adult Basic Education (ABE) and English as a second Language (ESL) instruction to adults in Jackson, Hillsdale and Lenawee counties. These services are offered at no charge to the learner, are confidential, and tailor to the needs of the individual learner.

English as a Second Language (ESL) is a quickly growing segment of the adult literacy program. The ESL program provides both tutor-based and classroom-based instruction to non-English speaking persons. Improve your speaking for daily tasks, such as shopping, visiting the doctor, or using the telephone. Increase your ability to communicate with co-workers and supervisors. Gain confidence for talking to your child's teacher. Listening activities will also improve your ability to understand spoken English. Class times are available for beginner, intermediate and advanced level students.

Adult Basic Education is tutor-based. Each adult learner is matched one-on-one with an adult volunteer that tutors according to the individual needs and goals of the learner. This program operates year round and has open-ended enrollment.

SUCCESS STORIES
In one year, Keith was able to improve his reading ability by more than two grade levels. He learned to read and fill out a job application and studied for and passed his employment exam. He now has a full time job with benefits. In spite of his physical challenges, Keith is a hard worker and now loves his newfound gifts of writing and using the Internet. "I can't say enough good things about my tutor," says Keith, "I love the way she teaches me on my level!" Since becoming a client of Community Action's Learning Partners Program, Keith has experienced remarkable change in his levels of confidence and independence. "I am so happy with my life now," adds Keith.

Other notables...a dad in the program is reading books to his pre-schoolers for the very first time. The program gave him the confidence to read out loud...another student increased his reading level by more than two grades in six months...one self-employed learner now understands how to do paperwork required by the government...another learner was recently able to do a brief reading in church.
