It Matters to your Child and the Program Head Start gets a large part of its funding from the Federal government. In return for this, Head Start agrees to provide evidence of products and services donated to the program. This is known as In-Kind. The amount needed is over $36,000 per month. If the program does not meet this In-Kind amount, it could mean a loss of funding.
All classrooms have In-Kind forms on which to keep a record of your donations of time, services and contributions. If you don’t know where they are, ask your child’s teacher. Following are examples of In-Kind:
Transportation:If you provide transportation for your child (or someone elses) to or from Head Start, you provide a service to the program. To determine the In-Kind, keep track of the time it takes you to bring your child to the center, take him/her to the classroom, and to return to your home. When you pick your child up, you count that amount of time again. You record the time on the In-Kind sheet in your child’s classroom for each trip you make.
Another very important service you can provide for the program is to serve as a Bus Rider. State of Michigan Licensing Rules for Child Care Centers state that when more than 8 children, 2-1/2 to 5 years of age, are in transit, there shall be another adult present in addition to the bus driver. If your teacher or the transportation Department calls on you to be a Bus Rider, please consider helping us out whenever you can. By volunteering as a Bus Rider you will ensure that all program children will be able to be transported on time and will receive the full benefits of the program.

Volunteer:Your time helping in the classroom, attending Center, Parent or Policy Council meetings, going to conferences/training, or on field trips counts as In-Kind. If your child’s teacher sends home a special project to do, the time you spend benefits the program and is considered In-Kind. If you help your child’s teacher by working on a project at home of by making phone calls, report your time. If you are working on a fund raiser, calling for donations or whatever you are doing for the program, keep track of your time; it has value as In-Kind.
If you bring a treat to your child’s class, the cost counts as In-Kind. If you donate something to the classroom, the cost counts as In-Kind if it is new, and the current value counts if it is used. If you contact a business to make a donation, the time you spend getting the donation counts as In-Kind, in addition to the value of the donation.
Volunteering for the program either in the classroom or on the bus not only helps the program but will mean a lot to your child as well. You will have the benefit of sharing time with your child while you provide a valuable service to the program and the community at large. VOLUNTEER TODAY!
